ROLLING STONES SINGER BERNARD FOWLER TALKS STONES AND NEW SOLO ALBUM ON INTERVIEWING THE LEGENDS W/RAY SHASHO-BBS RADIO

RELEASES NEW SOLO ALBUM

“It’s Rolling Stones songs deconstructed,” says Bernard Fowler, explaining the title of his new album Inside Out.  “I just took these songs and turned them inside-out.”
Bernard Fowler has another gig too: he’s sung and played percussion with the Rolling Stones, on stage and in the studio, since 1988.  At soundcheck somewhere along their 2015 Zip Code tour, he started riffing on a Stones song as dramatically delivered spoken-word — and the band dug it.  “Mick said, ‘Bernard, I’ve heard Rolling Stones songs done a lot of ways but never like this,’” Fowler recalls.  “I said, ‘Well, you know what?  When the tour is over, I’m going to cut it.’  And he said, ‘You should.’  That’s all I had to hear.  That was the green light.”

And that’s how it came to be that one of rock and pop’s most sought-after singers doesn’t sing a note on his new record.
Lots of people have celebrated Keith Richards’ iconic riffs, Mick Jagger’s trademark howl-and-strut, and the Rolling Stones’ blazing live show, but there’s never been such a thoughtful, soul-baring and thoroughly original appreciation of the band’s lyrics.  In order to do that, Fowler pared away the chord changes and even the melodies and left only the words, then declaimed them like the world’s coolest preacher atop slammin’ grooves powered by a who’s who of crackerjack players.  It’s not quite singing, but only a peerless vocalist could pull it off so powerfully, his incantations seething with righteous anger, foreboding and desire.
That strong feeling of back-in-the-day New York is where the autobiography comes in.  Growing up in New York City’s predominantly black and Puerto Rican Queens Bridge Projects, Fowler listened to a lot of funk and R&B.  Maybe that’s why Inside Out is laced with references to touchstones like James Brown (“Dancing with Mr. D”), War and the Chambers Brothers (“Time Waits for No One”), Curtis Mayfield (“Sister Morphine”) and any number of ‘70s funkateers.  And it just so happens that the first record Fowler’s dad ever gave him was 12 x 5 — the second album by up-and-coming British R&B combo the Rolling Stones.

The full-band tracks feature top-shelf players: long-time Stones bassist Darryl Jones, former Miles Davis drummer/producer Vince Wilburn, Jr., guitarist George Evans and pop/R&B session heavyweight Michael Bearden on piano.  Drummer Clayton Cameron, renowned as “the Brush Master,” added extra texture.  Then Fowler called in guitarist Ray Parker, Jr.  “He came over, plugged in and started playing,” says Fowler, “and I was screaming.  Everybody was screaming.  He was killing it.  Killing it.”  Listen for Parker’s work on “Time Waits for No One” and “Sister Morphine.”
Inside Out demonstrates what cover versions are supposed to be: reinterpretations that are not only a vehicle for personal expression, but also put the material in a new light.  “People hear their favorite songs all the time — but sometimes they don’t really hear them,” Fowler says.  “This is a way to hear them all over again and appreciate them in a whole new way.”  But the beauty of Inside Out is that it provides an opportunity to appreciate Bernard Fowler in a whole new way too.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

For over 50 years, John Mayall has served as a pioneer of blues music, rightly earning him the title, "The Godfather of British Blues". In 2013, John signed with producer Eric Corne's label, Forty Below Records, and has since been experiencing a true artistic and career renaissance, including a Blues Hall of Fame induction in 2015.
On February 22nd Forty Below Records will release Nobody Told Me, the new studio album from The Godfather of British Blues, John Mayall. As with his last handful of albums, Mayall again shares production duties with Forty Below Founder Eric Corne who also handles engineering and mixing duties.
Eric Burdon from The Animals-Stu Leathwood from The Koobas-Keith Ellis from The Koobas-Roy Wood  from Woods and The o'jays- Jimi Hendrix from The Jimi Hendrix Experience-Noel Redding from The Jimi Hendrix Experience-Carl Wayne-John Mayall-Steve Winwood from Traffic-Trevor Burton from Steve Gibbons Band-Roy Morris The Koobas

The album boasts an impressive and diverse list of guest guitarists, all personal favorites of Mayall’s including Todd Rundgren, Little Steven Van Zandt of The E Street Band, Alex Lifeson from Rush, Joe Bonamassa, Larry McCray and Carolyn Wonderland who will be joining the band on tour. Also, on hand are Mayall’s dynamic Chicago rhythm section of Greg Rzab on bass guitar and Jay Davenport on drums, along with Billy Watts (Lucinda Williams) on rhythm guitar and Mayall’s regular horn section, moonlighting from their day job in The Late Show with Conan O’Brien’s house band.

The album was recorded at The Foo Fighters’ Studio 606 on the same legendary Sound City Neve console his one-time protégés from Fleetwood Mac used to record parts of the best-selling Rumors album.
“This project has been a true labor of love for me and I can’t wait for people to hear the fireworks that took place,” beams Mayall. Nobody Told Me is an apt title for the blues icon who suffered a recent unexpected health scare shortly after recording the album. But, the seemingly ageless road dog, who famously takes no days off and carries his own gear on tour, has been given a clean bill of health and plans to return to his usual grueling touring schedule to support the release.
QUOTES
John Mayall has actually run an incredibly great school for musicians. …Eric Clapton

John Mayall, he was the Master of It. If it wasn't for the British musicians, a lot of us black musicians in America would still be catchin' the hell that we caught long before. So, thanks to all you guys, thank you very much! …BB King

I had this friend in London, John Mayall of the Bluesbreakers, who used to play me a lot of records late at night. He was a kind of DJ-type guy. You'd go back to his place, and he'd sit you down, give you a drink, and say "Just check this out." He'd go over to his deck, and for hours he'd blast you with B.B. King, Eric Clapton - he was sort of showing me where all of Eric's stuff was from, you know. He gave me a little evening's education in that. I was turned on after that, and I went and bought an Epiphone. So, then I could wind up with the Vox amp and get some nice feedback. Paul McCartney

STEVE HUNTER LEGENDARY GUITARIST INTERVIEWED ON THE RAY SHASHO SHOW

S   T   E   V   E     H   U   N   T   E   R
LEGENDARY GUITARIST
With L  O  U    R  E  E  D
&  A  L  I  C  E    C  O  O  P  E  R
NEW RELEASE
'BEFORE THE LIGHTS GO OUT'
“Before The Lights Go Out” is long time Alice Cooper/Lou Reed Guitarist Steve Hunter's latest solo album. The cover art and title make a statement about his failing eyesight, but don't make the mistake of thinking this is a quiet wave goodbye. As soon as you put on the first track, you will know that this is more like a Blues Rock Declaration of Independence! There are sexy grooves, luscious guitar tones and melodies galore.
As with all Hunter's releases, there is some diversity and sound imagery, not least of which is Tienes Mi Corazón where alongside his nylon string improvisation comes the sound of his own heart. And listen out for Joe Satriani adding his fire to the heat of “Mojo Man.”
Also joining Steve on a couple of tracks are two great Bass players: Erik Scott can be heard on “Mojo Man,” Erik is also an Alice Cooper alumni. On “Under The Bodhi Tree” is Andy Stoller. Steve and Andy toured together with Tracy Chapman during the “Telling Stories” album period, most recently Andy has been touring with Ann Wilson of Heart.
Says Steve, “This album was a real joy for me on many levels. A big part of the inspiration and motivation that kept me going; was from all the people out there who had faith in me and encouraged me through the entire process with their donations and comments. It was really a wonderful experience having you all be a part of it. It's my deepest hope and desire that you all enjoy the music on this album as much as I enjoyed making it. Thank you and God bless!”

Steve Hunter is his own man; he has been around the block with a forty-five year career. From his 1973 solos on Alice Cooper's “Billion Dollar Babies” album, his legendary acoustic work on Peter Gabriel's “Solsbury Hill,” his “Intro” to Lou Reed's “Sweet Jane” and his searing opening solos on Aerosmith's version of “Train Kept A Rolling.”

Most recently he can be heard on Alice Cooper's 2017 album “Paranormal” making this his ninth Cooper album appearance. The Deacon is not done yet but his life is evolving! He has challenges playing live now but his honed skill, tone, power and soul, is dished up on this hot plate of guitar driven instrumental tastiness.
